Do I Need to Worry About Ventilation in My Attic Year-Round?

Ray St. Clair Roofing wants to remind you of the importance of ventilation this winter. Yes, this winter! We all know the importance of ventilation during the summer months.

Trapped heat in the attic makes your home uncomfortable and causes your air conditioner to work overtime. It can also cause your roof to age prematurely.

Attic ventilation

Do I Need to Worry about Ventilation in the Winter?

Yes, ventilation is essential in the winter months. Once the heat within your home rises and passes through the attic insulation, you have obtained the heat's usefulness.

The problem arises when warm heat, which contains moisture from cooking and bathing, reaches the cold winter attic air space.

Can you give any pricing or estimates over the phone?

Unfortunately, we cannot. There are so many variables that can dictate the cost of your project. Here are just a few of the variables that need to be considered:

  • How accessible is the work?
  • How many layers of existing roof are there?
  • What is the steepness or pitch of the roof?
  • How many stories tall is your home?
  • How many flashing details are there?
  • What style, warranty, color, and make do you prefer?

What is an Ice Dam, and What Can I Do to Prevent One from Occurring?

Explanation of an Ice Dam: An ice dam typically starts when a sufficient amount of snowfall takes place and accumulates on your roof. A slight thaw from heat rising through the ceiling into the attic warms the roof surface and melts the snow close to your roof deck. The snow heated from these various portions of your home now flows down until it reaches the soffit and gutter areas, where it will freeze due to this area of your home not being heated.

Preventative Measures:

  • Additional insulation in your attic space can help slow down the quick release of hot air through the attic and slow down the melting process.
  • Installing Ice Guard as underlayment along gutter lines, valleys, and penetrations can also help. Ice Guard is a petroleum-based product with a sticky backing that adheres to the roof deck. When nails penetrate this material as the roof is applied, the ice guard self-seals around the nails, making them waterproof.
  • Heat coils can be installed along gutter lines, valleys, troughs, and gutter systems to prevent icing from taking place.

Are you insured?

Yes, Ray St. Clair Roofing is fully insured with workmens' compensation and liability Insurance.

Do you give free estimates?

Yes, we do! But we do charge for roof inspections. Let us explain the difference.

When a customer has a problem or a need for our services -- this is an estimate. It could be a roof leak, an estimate for new gutters, ventilation, new siding, insulation, etc.

When someone is not aware of there being any problems and just want their roof, siding, gutters, etc. checked for potential attention that may be needed or for preparation to sell or buy, that is considered an inspection which we do charge for.

If we find a problem during inspection and an estimate is provided and accepted, in most cases, we will waive the fee of the inspection.

Do I need to be there for an estimate?

We encourage the homeowner to be present. – We find it in your best interest to be there during the exam of your property so we can investigate all aspects of the job accurately and offer the proper solution or scope of work you are requesting.

Do you insulate attics and walls?

We only add insulation to attics. The majority of your heat loss happens through the attic.
